Language and Conflict in the Middle East between Instrumentality and Symbolism

This presentation will discuss how language as instrument and language as symbol are deployed in the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians over the land of historical Palestine. It will also suggest that this language-embroiled conflict is part of a larger semiotic conflict that involves the appropriation of material culture and the erasure of the other to press one’s claims in a settler-colonial setting.
