Talk Information:
Most longstanding Jewish language varieties, such as Bukharian, Ladino, Judeo-Arabic, and Jewish Neo-Aramaic are now endangered. This talk explains the factors that led to their endangerment, including migration, genocide, and nationalistic language policies. It then analyzes the strategies contemporary Jews are
using to respond to the trends, including postvernacular engagement, metalinguistic communities, and ethnolinguistic infusion.
