Dr. Rebecca Y. Bayeck, Assistant professor in instructional Technology and Learning Sciences. My research interests lie at the intersection of learning sciences, educational technology, literacy studies, and the interdisciplinary field of game studies. Within this intersection, my research includes games (digital & analog); learning and literacies including AI literacies; the design of inclusive learning spaces and exhibitions. I am also interested in how culture shapes learning, design, and literacy practices in different environments.

I hold a dual-Ph.D in Learning Design and Technology and Comparative International Education from Pennsylvania State University. She recently worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City.

Making Sense of Classic African Board Games in the Algorithmic Era
October 25, 2024 | 9:00 AM

Games and gameplay have long been perceived as spaces of fun, where learning anything important to one’s daily life is irrelevant. Yet, in recent years, research has shown that games are learning spaces that deserve scholarly attention. The growing field of Game Studies has shown that playing games results in the acquisition of various literacies such as critical thinking, computational thinking, mathematical thinking, and strategic thinking which are critical for the 21st Century. However, limited attention has been given to African games, and particularly to classic African board games. In this presentation, Dr. Bayeck engages the audience in a discussion about classic African board games and wonders how we can make sense of these games in the algorithmic era.
