Among the more visible mainstream responses, in Southeastern Europe, to the racial justice protests of summer 2020, a good number sought to identify ordinary white Americans as the true victims of (“anti-white”) racism, at the hands of an allegedly hypocritical liberal establishment and Afro-descendent masses literally gone mad. Taking these responses as its point of departure, this presentation probes the genealogy and the logic of anti-Black racism in the region, from the 18th century to the present moment, with a distinct focus on the country of Bulgaria.
