International Collaboration, Gender Politics, and the Making of “When Women Speak”
November 17, 2023 | 9:00 AM

The documentary film, When Women Speak, was
directed by Aseye Tamakloe and shot entirely in Ghana, by a Ghanaian film crew. Behind the film was an international collaborative research project, jointly
designed and managed by Professor Akosua Adoamko
Ampofo and Professor Kate Skinner. Funded primarily by the British Academy's Sustainable Development
Programme, the project entailed archival and oral history research into the history of women's mobilisations in Ghana since independence. In the course of this research, we grappled with questions such as, 'What exactly is a gender activist?' 'Who claims or rejects this label and why?' 'How does one decide what not to include in a documentary film or in the underlying research?' 'Who gets to represent whom?' At this Global Virtual Forum, we will screen part of the film and share our experiences in a Q&A.
