Marx and communication: an integrationist perspective
February 21, 2025 | 9:00 AM

In this presentation, I intend to ask questions about Marx’s views of language and communication, focussing particularly on the significance of his notion of Verkehr, in the context of his overall views on sociality and social transformation. More particularly, I aim to examine Marx’s views in relation to the contemporary integrationist approach to communication based in the work of the late Roy Harris. I hope to show that integrationism offers important insights on communication which are compatible with, and may indeed enhance, a Marxian view of social organisation and transformation as well as throwing new light on communicational and linguistic principles developed in the works of V N Voloshinov and L S Vygotsky.
